What is an Animated Kaleidoscope?

Websters defines kaleidoscope as "a small tube containing bits of colored glass that change patterns as the tube is turned". Over the years I have seen many programs that claim to be kaleidoscopes. They typically display a variety of colorful lines or dots on the screen in geometric patterns. Although these programs can create some impressive images, they seldom mimick real kaleidoscopes.

These animated images simulate what you would see when you look into a real "three mirror" kaleidoscope. If you enjoy the relaxing effect of a kaleidoscope, then check out these images.

The animated GIF images require a browser that supports amniated GIF images. The JAVA app kaleidoscope requires a browser that supports JAVA. If you are using Netscape Navigator, you must have version 2.0 or greater to view these images properly. All version of Microsoft Internet Explorer should work.

Please be patient while loading these images. For the GIF animations, the animation will seem slow while the image loads. After the entire image is loaded the animation will become smoother. The JAVA app must load a data image after it starts and before it displays the kaleidoscope.
